A Trip to Acadia Broadcasting

The main purpose for the class visiting Acadia Broadcasting Limited was to understand how a radio station operates. The class took a tour around the station, understanding the expectations from each part of the station. The guest speaker showed us a presentation on how effective and efficient advertisements are when broadcasted through radio.

The guest speaker provided our class with copious amount of information. Three specific facts/details that stood out to me were:

  • I was impressed by how well the radio station understand its target market. The information presented of knowing the audience was so detailed; knowing the audience’s attention span and providing more ads or more news stories on each station relating to the target market was impressive.

  • I found it interesting how the station plans its playtime the day in advance. It is interesting to imagine how fun it would be to organize the order of a station for the day in advance. Planning when and what advertisements to play seems like an entertaining job.

  • I was impressed by how much things happen at the radio station, the guest speaker explained the process of an advertisement campaign. I found it interesting that so many people at Acadia Broadcasting meet with each client. Demonstrating how effective teamwork really can be.

One note of the guest speaker that interested me was the process of how airtime for advertisements is organized. Most being booked a month in advanced. I found it interesting how the radio station acts as an advertising agency suggesting companies to advertise so much. I was interested in the pricing strategies of how much to pay and what time of the day the ad is played.

An additional question I reflected upon afterwards was how is Acadia Broadcasting effected and how do they compete with satellite radios such as SIRIS, or other satellite radio stations.

I found the trip to the radio station was very significant. It was interesting to view how much radio advertisements costs. It was interesting to hear the list of responsibilities each colleague’s responsibility. I enjoy a work place, which is fast paced, and works as a team. The radio station seemed to provide this atmosphere. I was not aware of how much action happens at the radio station, but interests me in learning more. For my career, I would like to be a manager, and experiencing the trip to radio station changed my perspective of careers in radio.
